Kawela Bay is one of Oahu's most secluded and magical beaches on the North Shore, sheltered by a natural reef with remarkably calm turquoise water. Giant banyan trees line the shore, including a famous century-old specimen spanning over 100 feet that was a filming location for LOST and Pirates of the Caribbean. Sea turtles are regularly spotted resting on the sand. The combination of calm water, ancient banyan trees, tropical jungle, and total seclusion creates an intimate ceremony setting. Max 30 guests (state permit limit). Hawaii DLNR Wiki Permit required ($20-$35 for 2-hour slot, apply at wikipermits.ehawaii.gov). Liability insurance certificate required ($1M general liability naming State of Hawaii as additional insured). No structures, commercial activity, or drones without authorization. Commercial photographers need a Wiki Permit or Hawaii State Film Permit. Alcohol prohibited without specific authorization. Access via 5-minute walk from roadside or 20-30 minute beach walk from Turtle Bay Resort. Street parking on Kamehameha Highway (limited spaces). No wheelchair accessibility. No restrooms at beach — nearest facilities at Turtle Bay Resort (~20-30 min walk). Standing ceremony only under or near the banyan trees. Best times: morning (before 10am) or April–May and September–October. Avoid November–February due to North Shore surf season affecting beach walk.
