Hearst Castle (officially known as Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument) is a historic hilltop estate and museum located near San Simeon, California, on the Central Coast of the United States. It was envisioned and built by William Randolph Hearst, the influential newspaper magnate, who began construction in 1919 and continued expanding the property until 1947.
The estate called La Cuesta Encantada, Spanish for “The Enchanted Hill”—is a stunning example of Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival architecture designed by pioneering architect Julia Morgan. The complex sits high above the Pacific Ocean and includes a grand main building called Casa Grande, three lavish guesthouses, terraced gardens, ornate fountains, and both indoor and outdoor pools. The famous Neptune Pool and the richly detailed indoor Roman Pool are among the most photographed features.
Built as a luxurious private residence and entertaining venue, Hearst Castle hosted many of the era’s most famous figures, including Hollywood stars, political leaders, and cultural icons. Today, the property is owned by the State of California and operated as a museum and state park, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who come to explore its opulent rooms, art collections, and expansive grounds.
