Location Guide

California Guide

Southern California offers a stunning diversity of landscapes — from desert canyons to ocean bluffs. Here are the most popular SoCal elopement destinations on Wedy:

Joshua Tree National Park

The otherworldly rock formations and twisted Joshua trees create an unforgettable desert ceremony backdrop. Cap Rock and Indian Cove Amphitheater are the most popular ceremony spots. A National Park Service permit ($120) is required, and ceremonies are limited to 35 guests (100 at Indian Cove). The best months are October through March when daytime temperatures are 60–75°F — summer heat regularly exceeds 100°F.

Malibu & Los Angeles

El Matador State Beach is one of the most photographed elopement locations in the world — dramatic sea stacks, natural rock arches, and golden-hour light that photographers love. Point Dume offers panoramic ocean views from a blufftop perch. LA also offers urban options like Griffith Observatory for couples who want city skyline backdrops. Beach permits run $25–$100 through California State Parks.

San Diego

With year-round mild weather (average 70°F), San Diego is perfect for outdoor elopements any day of the year. Sunset Cliffs is the most dramatic coastal spot — rugged bluffs with unobstructed Pacific views. Balboa Park’s Spanish Colonial architecture offers a completely different vibe. Torrey Pines State Reserve provides clifftop trails above the ocean with rare Torrey pine trees.

Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Gardens is the #1 elopement spot in the region — historic Mediterranean architecture with manicured gardens. It’s free for ceremonies under 25 people (no permit needed for the gardens). For beach ceremonies, Butterfly Beach and Hendry’s Beach are popular choices with mountain-meets-ocean views.

Palm Springs & Coachella Valley

The iconic windmill fields along North Indian Canyon Drive create a surreal, cinematic backdrop. The Coachella Valley Preserve at Thousand Palms Oasis offers a hidden desert oasis with native fan palms. Palm Springs’ mid-century modern architecture and mountain views add variety. Best months: November through April.
